Lucky Ode to Kylin Orderly】瑞应麒麟颂【有序】

The minister heard that there are four unicorns headed by the benevolent beasts, but the saint benevolence reigns, and then I see that it is not accidental, and the sky is also Xuanyuan (1) in the world. Although I may see it, it is rare, but I, the Emperor Taizong (2), are in the same heaven and earth. The birth of the unicorn should be based on the present, the emperor's majesty, the great sage, the supreme position, benevolence and righteousness are gradually being covered by the people of all nations…………………………….

应麒麟颂【有序】
  臣闻灵物有四麒麟为首是曰仁兽惟圣仁在位而后见非偶然也天也轩辕在世麟育于囿其后虽或见之然亦少矣惟我太宗皇帝徳同天地而天两生麒麟以应之今皇帝陛下以大圣之徳居至尊之位仁恩义泽渐被万邦民物恬熙逺迩无间盖与前圣比隆并美宣徳八年八月海外诸蕃国以麒麟来献生质之美性资之纯考之瑞图实与恊合从以金狮紫象虎福禄诸兽皆容止安驯文彩焕耀进趋有仪率舞中节此诚圣徳格天是以天心恱鍳产此大瑞实彰皇仁之大笃近而逮逺也圣子神孙仁厚之应于此见矣臣忝职词林以文字为业覩兹瑞应无任忻抃宜有颂歌以传永久谨拜手稽首而献颂曰
  四灵孰先惟此祥麟圣感则生实由天乎五行之精储和凝粹厥性孔纯服仁合义其尾维牛其身维麕专居特逰不旅不羣有圎其蹄维马是似有觩其角亦不以觝择地而行蹈矩中规鸣声以时律吕实谐凡物之生避而弗践治化昭明其迹乃见维南诸蕃粤在穷荒海波际天融此渺茫四圣一心日临天覆滂霈大恩沾洽逺夷苏枯濡槁融为春熙至和絪緼遂产灵物夫岂偶然时应而出岛屿之间荣光烛宵徐而视之其灵昭昭蕃酋愕眙曰天所贶岂为鄙防天子在上其容舒舒其来于于诚以将之皇徳之符徳符维何帝命用告式彰圣仁柔逺之效阳侯率职防澜不兴十余万里贡之天京山川邈悠皎日垂绚载道欢呼麒麟来献鲜颷廓清有云而卿百辟讴歌麒麟来廷从以金狮紫象元虎亦有福禄昻昻噳噳簉迹彤墀率舞有仪仰瞻六龙乐遂其依于维嘉生世不常见考牒稽图亶天之眷昔黄帝时育于囿中后有明哲亦罕其逢迨我太祖圣神文武万邦咸和各得其所祥麟之来聿昭时雍颂声载扬穆如清风维圣天子道徳全备髙明配天博厚配地恵于下民克笃其施草木鸟兽亦罔不宜天监孔明用显厥应嫓美前圣以昌景命国家太平悠久之徴圣子神孙振振绳绳华夏蛮貊安此盛治圣夀万年寳祚万

His Majesty the Emperor Gongwei, equipped with the virtues of the holy god of civil and martial arts, was ordered by the sky to control all directions. …………….. Note: this poem survives in the Gujin Tushu Jicheng (古今圖書集成) written between 1700 and 1725.

 

瑞應麒麟頌》〈有序〉

恭惟皇帝陛下,備聖神文武之德,受天明命,統御萬方。無間遠邇,熙然泰和。天心昭貺,靈應迭至。乃永樂十二年九月八日,麻林國士復以麒麟來獻,數萬里至於闕下。臣謹按《瑞記》曰:「麒麟,仁獸也,必中國有聖人則出。」 皇上仁育宇內諸福之物,所以昭德效祥者,不可殫紀。而麒麟則兩見於歲期之間,天之所以彰「應於皇上者,豈偶然哉?」 群臣百工稽首稱賀,皇上謙敬自持,讓而弗有。深惟太祖高帝創業艱難,兢兢業業,日慎一日,益思所以祗順天心,安養黎庶。又舉前代之君矜恃祥應、不能正身修德、自致敗亂者,以為鑒戒。玉音布昭如日月,在庭之臣祗服贊頌,頌皇上敬天勤民、不矜不伐,雖堯、舜、禹、湯、文、武不能過也。臣聞「天道無息,聖人之德亦至誠無息,故足以參天地、育萬物。皇上之德至矣,而猶敬慎如此,是即天地之德、天地之心也。」 明明上帝所以眷佑於皇上者,蓋愈隆愈盛矣。國家有萬萬年太平之慶,群臣兆民亦永有賴焉。臣忝職文字,睹茲盛美,歡戴之情,萬倍常品。謹撰《頌詩》一首上進。頌曰:

 

赫赫明明,上帝之命。命於天子,萬邦是理。維此萬邦, 靡不來王。無有遠邇,維皇之治。皇有大德,肫肫其仁。 惠養下民,以對上天。下民有言,曰「我父母,育我童幼, 暨於黃耇。我寒我飢,衣之食之。嗟我民庶,樂此熙熙。」 上帝鑒觀,皇德之厚。爰發其祥,顯天之佑。其祥伊何? 是生麒麟。昭昭維靈,式安且馴。凡物有生,弗踐弗履。 「既合於仁,亦協於義,有隆其聲,黃鐘大呂《麒麟在原》, 民歌且舞。天開日月,來獻於京。鼓舞懽呼,麒麟在庭。」 群臣上言,「嘉祥來格。維物之祥,實昭皇德。」皇帝曰:「嘻! 維命靡常,維敬厥祥,天是用昌。昔我太祖,靈承於旅, 既艱既勤,闢於土宇。傳祚在予,予敬用承。惟祥之來, 豈敢或矜。在昔之君,有土有人,恃祥弗敬,用墜厥命。 凡爾百僚,維德是輔。以事上帝,紹我太祖。」臣拜稽首: 「大哉皇仁!如天之行,如日之升。」臣拜稽首,「一哉皇心。 上帝是歆,太祖是臨,天命純固。皇帝在御,彌億萬年 永作民主。永作民主,敬事於天。聖子聖孫,萬世其傳。」

(1) Xuanyuan: The Yellow Emperor, one of the legendary Chinese sovereigns, also called Xuanyuan; Xuanyuan is also the name of the star Regulus, also associated to the broader constellations Leo and Lynx, of which the latter is said to represent the body of the Emperor’s animal form.

(2) Emperor Taizong: Yongle, temple name (Ming) Taizong, personal name Zhu Di, (1360-1424).

(3) Yongle: — personal name Zhu Di, or Chu Ti— was the third Emperor of the Ming dynasty, reigning from 1402 to 1424.

(4) Ma-Lin: Malindi in Kenya.
