And the Nile exit from the Mountain of the Moon, and the mountain of the moon is called for its whiteness, because snow will not go away on it. And to much moisture is also frequent, because dew is due to the influence of the moon, and if it came out of the mountain of the moon, it poured into a lake behind the equator. And it will go around the land of Nubia and come to Egypt, and some of it poured at Damietta (1)  into the sea……..The author of the suwar al aqalim (2) said: The beginning of the Nile water is unknown because it comes out of a cave behind the land of the Zinj and was never reached.

(1) Damietta: important town in the delta of the Nile.

(2) The author of the suwar al aqalim: Abu Zayd al-Balkhi (850-934) Persia. Work not extant.
