Reefs and islands south of Mafia (up to Kilwa)

-------------------------------------------------------

Only found with Ibn Majid (1470)

Okuza (Vakula)

The island has only a very small strip of trees in a way bigger sandy island.  The Africa Pilot 1919: the island is covered with casuarinas and can be seen 14 miles from the deck of a vessel. No water to be found on the island.

Nyuni (Kilva Buni)

There is a whole village on the north west side of this 500m by 300m island.

Songo-Songo (Chundju-Chundju) island. The Africa Pilot 1919: the island is covered with trees, 2.5 miles long. It has a village near its eastern shore and wells with tolerably good water in the coral nearly in its center. Bullocks and goats are bred on the island. (Now it even has an airstrip).

Fanjove (Hanach) island. The island is 700 m long and privately owned, no habitation.

Singino Hill (Mountain of the North)

What is meant is north of Kilwa (on the mainland). The top of this hill at 170m high is 4km south of Kilwa Kivinje. The hill serves as a beacon for the entry in Kilwa.
