Chu Ssu-Pen (1320) (Kuang Yu T'u)
(the Mongol atlas)
-----------------

Guangyutu 廣輿圖 was produced on the base of the map Yuditu 輿地圖 that had been created by Zhu Siben 朱思本 (1273-1337). He drew his maps by a grid pattern. It was published in manuscript version and also cut on a stele in a Court of a Monastery. It survived in an enlarged version produced by the scholar Luo Hongxian 羅洪先 (1504-1564). In his world map, he shows Africa with a triangular shape. At that time Europe and Arabia still depicted Africa 'with a tip pointing east. Some important later Chinese maps were based on his.

Also called Zhu Siben.

The original map was simply titled Yu T’u (Terrestrial Map). It was revised by Lo Hung-hsien and printed in 1555, under the title Kuang Yu T’u (Enlarged Terrestrial Atlas). This is the earliest extant copy of Chu Ssu-Pen’s work.

Guang Yu Tu (廣與圖) (Enlarged terrestrial atlas) (1555) by Luo Hongxian (羅洪先).

Among the maps of the atlas, one is entitled The Countries in the Southwestern Sea that covers a considerable portion of the Indian Ocean and a large part of Africa.

His map is the first one to point Africa towards the south. There are several extant copies of the map, not all have the same inscriptions.

1  桑骨人 or 桑骨八 Sang gu ren (Zangi people) or San gu ba (Zanzibar) (wrongly put on the west coast).

2 這不魯哈麻 Zhebulu Hama = Jabal al-Qamar (Mountains of the Moon) translated by Takahashi.

纳亦思津 Ha na yi si jin (Ha-na-i-ssu-chin) from hatt al-istiua, meaning equator. An older translation says: Al-Nil-Azrak, The Blue Nile

should be 娣八奴 Di ba nu (Ti-pa-nu) Island slaves (Ti-pa from diva and nu meaning slaves) Diba or dwipa is the old name for the Maldive Islands. Or: Tabarna; Arabic for Taprobane (Ceylon) of Ptolemy. On the picture to the right we have here: 桑骨 Sang gu ren nu; Zan-gi people slaves.

Ku liu ?? (Kilwa)

喝竭 He jie ?? On the Kangnido: 喝卒 He zu ?? (Pronounced: gou-tzoe) I think:  Djeziret-el-Qeroud (pronounced el goe-roo) island overtaken by monkeys. For this see my web-page for Ibn Said al Maghribi (1250) Kitab Djoughrafiya.

失阿剌里赤 Si a la tu li shi (Shih-a-la t'u-li-ch'ih). The Chinese web-book of the: Ancient Seven Seas Gazetteer (http://www.world10k.com/blog/?p=1335) on page 1335 translates 秃里赤Tu li shi as: ‘place of those made naked black and red’ and gives a list of books in which it is used. I think this must be translated here just as Sofala, a place of those made naked black and red.

冒西哈必剌 Mao xi ha bi la  ?? According to Nurlan Kenzheakhmet: 昌西哈必剌 Chang xi ha bi la = Zanj I Qanbala (Zanj of Qanbalu)
颗细 Ke xi da bin ?? I think: Djezir Arin = dome of the earth. For this see my web-page for Ibn Said al Maghribi (1250) Kitab Djoughrafiya.

10  哇阿哇 Wa a wa : according to my opinion this is to be Waq Waq.

-All the placenames that are transliterations are found in the work of Ibn Said al Maghribi (1250) Kitab Djoughrafiya. And Ibn Said makes them also all into islands off the east coast of Africa, except for Sofala which he puts on the main land.

-The names that give other information are in accordance with the information given by Muslim geographers. These are 4: Ti ba nu (Diba-nu) Island slaves. 7 Si a la tu li shi; Sofala, a place of those made naked black and red.

Note also that in part two of this atlas Ma-he-ha-shu 麻合哈叔  (Mogadishu) or

Magadheshu (Magadha) in India or still something else is mentioned on an island in the most eastern corner of map two.

It is this island that in the Da Ming Hun Yi Tu and in the Kangnido is moved to the west and split in an upper island being South Arabia and a lower East Africa (according to the theory of Kai-lung Ho). The names of the places are then also somehow altered to more closely resemble South Arabia and East Africa. On the island was already a Mogadishu indicated. It remains.
